All film/video makers: what's the best pc/laptop for editing?

I'm considering investing on a reasonably priced device that will give me more freedom to make documentaries and videos by myself. Hit me up! Thanks in advance :)

  • I'd recommend looking at some tutorials on Adobe Premiere Pro (for Mac and Windows) and FinalCutPro X (for Mac). See which one you like the look of and go from there. Adobe Premiere Pro has a steeper learning curve. FinalCutPro X may be a great option for you if you're learning!
  • @Alex Pérez That's more clear to me, thanks - all this jargon makes me feel dizzy Hahah I'm not a tech geek but I'm learning, and catching up at super fast pace. I think I'll give it a go at investing on a Mac.
  • @Katherine Luna Gate Sorry. NLE stands for Non-Linear Editing and it refers to any digital software used to edit video such as Premiere, Da Vinci Resolve or Final Cut, amongst others.

Mac are a great option. They’re reliable and well built, but they’re more expensive than PC’s running Windows.

As it’s been said, the specs are really important specially when it comes to the RAM (the more they have, the better) and the central processing unit. If you’re planning to create content in 3D or working with animated graphics, having a fast graphic processor unit is always important.

It all depends on your needs.
  • @Lobke van Eijk Very grateful for Your insights. I'm like You, hence why I preferred to ask the pros before embarking in researching and/or investing. I'll take all Your points into consideration.
  • @Alex Pérez SO... NLE... I'm so sorry, I don't do acronyms, particularly when it comes to technology. What do they stand for? Great point about software, though, thank You, I'll bare that in mind. Any particular device You might advise on?
  • I'd like to contribute with a different approach to this.

It's noy only importat to have a good machine for editing but also is really important to take the most out of your software or SO you're editing on.

For example, if you're editing on Mac you'd better use ProRes files to have a smoother playback. H.264 and Mac dont get along well.

It's also important to optimise your files via proxies or set up correctly your NLE (Premiere, Resolve, etc).
  • I always edited with Mac laptops and I'm about to purchase the MacBook 13'' with the new M1 chip. It seems to be very promising but, as @Lobke van Eijk wrote, the specs are very important and they depend on your needs and the kind of projects you handle.

Outside the Apple environment, the Lenovo P series and HP Z books seem to be interesting, at least on paper.
  • Although I’m a fan of Mac, I think it’s more important to look at the specs.
Speed, storage, I think minimum quad-core.
I don’t know that much about all this stuff someone helped me. So if you don’t know check with someone that knows. What programs do you want to run, and how many at the same time? What do you want to make? Based on that you know how much storage etc you need.

    Hope this helps!
