Any filmmakers with experience getting funding for a feature film?

I'd love to pick your brains with just a few questions about different funding routes. If you have answers to any of these questions it would be a massive help:

Do you tend to combine different funding routes, or do you heavily rely on one?
Have you ever used EIS/SEIS when working with private investors? Can films still work within the scheme?
What budget would you recommend not going over without a name actor?
How easy is it to get a sales agent or distributor to give you forecasts before getting funding, that you can use to help convince investors?

Thanks for reading.

  • @Ross McClure Hey Ross, thanks for your words of advice, it's much appreciated.

Yeah I'm predominately a DP, but I also run a prodcution company with my business partner who's a director. We're currently developing our first feature film, which she's currently writing.

We think we're going to bring in a producer to help us navigate the areas of filmmaking you don't really come across in short film making, i.e. distribution and funding large amounts. But also trying to learn as much for ourselves too.
  • Hi Mattias, I'm afraid I don't have any hard answers for you as I am also thinking about these things too!

However, from the knowledge I have gathered, if you're starting out and working at a lower budget, you should consider any and all funding possibilities. You never know who will want to invest in you. It's always good to have fingers in lots of pies rather than only one.

I see that you're a DP - do you have a script/producer/director already looking for funding or is this for your own project?

Keen to hear more about this subject!

    Good luck!
