Any tips or advice on how to start freelancing? How do you land that first client?

  • Hello Olivia,

I would say all of the advices other said and top of that:

    - Let's be practical you will need a bit of savings, it's always takes a bit of time getting noticed. If you mean freelancing as a contractor it's a bit different but in any case you should be prepared for ups and downs

    - Having a clarification about the industry / kind of brands etc. you want to work for and what is your strength

    - Having a clarification why you want to freelance. Is it the money? Creative freedom? You need some more time with kids at home? Whatever is the reason stick to that
  • Hey Olivia, the first thing is to have a consistent style that's your own. This can evolve over time, but your portfolio should look cohesive. But the big thing that worked for me was to just start emailing the people I thought my style was a good fit for. This means doing research about publications, agencies and brands that would be a good fit for your style, then finding out the art director's contact and writing them a short email saying you'd love to help out with any projects.

Hope this helps. I am actually running a course that teaches exactly what you asked in this question, plus a lot more, like how to negotiate, how to get agent and gallery attention, how to raise your self-worth as an artist, develop mindful practices of resilience, all of this aided by the accountability of a supportive community on the same journey. Maybe it could be of interest – hop on over to www.marinaesmeraldo.store/thecreativemap for more info. Registration is until July 31 :)
  • When I started out I worked with some recruiters (Major Players, RedSofa) I also got a few amazing bookings through YunoJuno!

Being proactive on The Dots and Behance job listings also helps.

    Good luck!
