Any ways I can improve and get models more comfy when first meeting them?

  • I usually just ask how they are and what made them get into modelling, this usually opens up convos from there, and you just bounce back and forth organically getting to know each other... It also helps if you play music whilst shooting - if there's ever silence the music masks it, and you can also talk about music.

Most importantly just relax and have fun with it, tell them what you're thinking about as you shoot - in my case it usually make them laugh as i have attention span of a puppy. It's also great to ask them if they have any input on what you are doing... helps make them feel more involved.

Rememeber you both human, you both finna create awesome work, if you seem relaxed, they'll pick up on that vibe.

    Really hope this helps :)
  • Weaving some of these questions into a general chat can be quite handy. I can't speak from experience with models, but these are some questions I bear in mind when just generally meeting people. Some feel lame, but they beat awkward silences and not knowing what to talk about. Also, the questions are in a specific order. They start quite wide/accessible, and become more focused/niché.

    -What’s your name?
    -Where do you live?
    -Do you have a family?
-What do you do for a living?
    -Do you have any hobbies/sports?
-Do you have any travel plans?
-What’s your life story in three sentences?
-If you could, would you like to be famous? In what way?
-If you could have anyone in the world, dead or alive, to dinner, who would you choose and why?

-Ever been in a fight? Tell me about it.
-Is there a day in your life that you’ll never forget?
-Is there an event in your childhood or teen years that has shaped the adult you are now?
-Is there anyone you’ve met who’s had a profound influence on you?
-What is a book (or books) you’ve given most as a gift, and why?
-Is there a book or film that has made you question your life decisions? Why?
-Tell me about a time in your life when you’ve struggled. Could be personally/ professionally
-If you had to have one phrase tattooed on yourself, what would it be?
-If you could change anything about the way you were raised, what would it be?

-What is the greatest accomplishment of your life?

-Tell me about a fun thing you’re currently saving for?
-What do you miss about being a kid?
-If you could wake up tomorrow with one superpower, what would it be?
-Your house is on fire and no person or animal you love is in it. What one object do you save?

-If a crystal ball could tell you the truth about yourself, your life, the future, or anything else, what would you want to know?
-If you could enter a time machine that guaranteed return and also made you invincible in the time period you’re visiting, where would you go?

  • Agree with @Kirsty Wood. There's nothing quite like a good chat and a chinwag, as they are a human being after all. :)
Always a great way to break the ice, before you even start getting your gear out. And also, keep communicating with them during the shoot too.
  • Chat with them, find out a bit about them, find your middle ground! A couple of other things, depending on the situation, offer snacks or drinks and if there's music playing let them pick.
