Best simple blogging platform?

I'm looking to start self-publishing a regular "column" about my experience as a freelance photographer with a view to sharing resources, advice and guides and later on evolving this all into a newsletter.

I'd like something that's simple, quick to use and decent for visuals, although the words will be the focus here. I'd also like to keep things free for the time being.

Currently I'm considering blogging from my website platform (Format) for ease and direct traffic but it's not the best, or Medium which I have used before, but I'd like to find out what you all are using at the moment?

Thanks in advance, and hope you're all having a lovely week so far x

  • Hey Ameena,
Medium worked for me, but it's very personal as a choice.
I see you received it as a suggestion but I'm looping-in, in case anyone else would have more suggestions here :)

  • @Robin Howie Yes that's what I really like, the community aspect of it. A bit of a frustrating trade-off! But cross-posting is a shout, may just have to take the time to do that for a bit and test.

Thank you for sharing those links, I've actually used exposure but completely forgot about it. It's very visually-focused but that could be ideal. Will have to revisit it :) and I'd not come across readymag before, looks bloody brilliant though.

Thanks, and thank you for the kind words. Right back at you - I had a very minor involvement with the national park city campaign, love that newspaper!
  • @Suzan Liban Yes that's the draw of Medium to me. Earning cash is always ideal too! Didn't really consider that part of Medium until you mentioned it to me though. Good to consider - thanks Suzan.
  • I also use Medium but it at comes at a bit of a tradeoff... it has a community there so it has the potential for other people to more easily discover your writing ... It’s a good platform but obviously not nested within your own site which has lots of drawbacks.

I’m in a similar(ish) position... the studio's site needs an overhaul and the blog element isn't really up to scratch in its current guise for longer reads... Currently, I’m crossposting on both my the studios own blog and also on Medium... It's a bit of a messy process but this way I can track traffic and see which platform is best to concentrate on before investing in the new studio site.

Not quite what you are after but I did see this which looked interesting:
    https://exposure.co/
    and I guess there’s also
    https://readymag.com/

if you wanted to control the output of it more and link away from your site to another platform (still though... Medium has the numbers right?)

    Lovely work btw!

  • Tumblr! Easy to make look good and simple interface for both you and your audience.
  • I have been using Wordpress for around five years now. I’ve tried out wix and square space but even though they’re easy to use they don’t offer you as many options later on if you want to upgrade your page.
