Can anyone please share any tips on getting into a more creative role later on in my digital / media career?

Having worked in digital marketing and performance agencies for nearly 20 years, specifically in media planning and buying and setting up teams to deliver, creating product proposition etc, I have finally realised my passion is on the creative side. I come to life when advising clients on how to repurpose and shoot / edit relevant assets and bringing their ads to life. Any tips on how to break through and specialise in this area greatly appreciated. I have experience ind elivering this but would love to focus solely in this area.

  • @ɐɹoᗡ ɐuu∀ ˥ Hi Anna, thank you for taking the time to reply, it's much appreciated.

I will think about how I can start on a portfolio whilst freelancing or potentially take a junior or part time position to gain experience. I hadn't considered all the creative contacts I will have made over the years so I will definitely look those up.

    Thanks for the useful advice.

  • @John Yorke Hi John, thank you for taking the time to reply, it's much appreciated.
I have been in media planning and buying and set up digital advertising teams for many years and have now become freelance. It's the creative side that really gets me excited and the most enjoyable part of the job, so I'm considering my options of making this a bigger part of my day to day. I do have a few ideas on moving into niche areas of this so I will explore further.

Thanks again for the useful advice.

This is really helpful advice, I hadnt thought of taking the application of creativity in my work so far and creating case studies from this, so thank you.

  • Try and define your values.

Are you looking for a role with a more creative title i.e. art director, photographer or a role that is more creative?

Is this an opportunity to create something unique or niche?

Maybe put together case studies for those jobs where you came to life.

What problem did it solve, what was the outcome, what were the learnings…

Make a note of every action you’ve taken to get you closer to your goal, however small.
  • Hi Emma,

As you described you would be into an art direction kind of role. For this and even any other kind of creative job you need a portfolio first and foremost. I would recommend to set up a plan for 5 pieces that fairly diverse and then try to use your existing connections in agnecies to get a junior position.
  • Hey Emma,
Are you currently working for yourself or an agency?
I would suggest a transition into a more creative role is achievable either way, I'm just wondering if you have alredy looked for oportunties to add more creative aspects to what you are already delivering for clients?
