Confusion over first freelance project (product design)

Hi I was wondering if there's anyone else that can empathize with me: I'm working (for free) with a injection moulds design studio owner (engineer) and a professor of marine science (also agri-expert), both with years of experience (20-30) that wants to create a product that helps farmers grow vine plants. The problem I have is that they both sound like they're focusing a lot on the product. I've started the project trying to immerse myself being a grower (I'm even trying to get hired in a botanical shop) to do research to *then* start ideating, but the engineer gave me a matrix whose questions sound more like a product analysis (who's it for, what problems solve, cultural barriers etc). So at this point I feel like they're rushing but I'm also afraid I might be the one who's not grinding enough (we don't have a deadline, but they'd prefer to have a presentation by the end of the year). Thing is that apparently I'm the one doing research and concept and basically I feel like they're telling me to focus on things that are way ahead of schedule. Is there anyone that had the same problem? How did you overcome it? Any product/industrial designer that can share it's first freelance experiences?
