COVID -19 has slowed down workloads, I'm spending my time learning Javascript. What are you doing in your sparetime if you've been effected?

  • @Nicole Gray Ahh yeah it's almost impossible to keep up with the new features ha! I'm probably not using the tools to their full potential thats for sure!
  • @Will Daulphin Oh wow now is probably a good time to invest thats for sure. Assuming Forex is similar to the Stock market? (I've not heard of Forex before)
  • @Ellen Turnill Montoya Yeah the Javascript learning is going well I've been doing it for about a year now and starting to convert the knowledge into actual products which are making me some side income which is really nice.

Great to hear, I need to try and channel some of that energy, I feel like I'm so painfully bad at drawing that I find the experience quite frustrating and stressful. I need to try going at it from a relaxed approach without putting pressure on the outcome. Are you planning on showing off any of the drawings or are you doing them for yourself ?
  • @Lech Orlowski Oh nice I've heard really good things about Affinity I feel like I'm too set in my ways with Adobe now to try and learn another tool similar to Illustrator or Photoshop though. I'd much prefer to dive into Cinema 4D or something if I need to learn a new tool. Let me know how you get on with Affinity though, maybe you can convince me otherwise!
  • @Mike Whyte This is great to hear, what resources are you using to learn? Once I finish with my current javascript project tradiotional animation is on my list of things to do!
  • @Rankin Team This project sounds great and I'm sure that with the amount of photos that you're taking the project will begin to find a theme. I hope you manage to trun it ino some sort of series to put out into the world! I know a few people who have said that the lockdown has allowed them to become much more observant of their day to day surrounds that they would usually overlook. It's nice to hear that there are some positive outcomes from all of this!
  • Having spent most of my life taking photographs pretty much every day, I knew I needed to give myself a project.
So in between all the zoom calls and Google hangouts, I found myself turning to a project that I’d wanted to do for a while. Photographing flowers.
People keep telling me I’m shooting like an A-level student, but I guess that’s okay if I’m really learning stuff. Strangely I feel like I found a new love for my medium. Not that I’d lost it but I very rarely took photographs just for fun. Now every photograph I take is for fun which can be quite daunting when it’s my profession The main thing for me, is it’s nice to know that I still have that burning passion. Hope that everyone that is being creative for themselves at this time feels the same and will eventually get something out of it.
  • Sounds great - how's it been going?!

I've been getting back to basics and drawing more! As we spend so much more time talking through screens (both for work and including the Zooms and Facetimes in the evening with friends and family too...) I've been finding it helpful to spend some time drawing and also letting the active part of my brain switch off as a way to restore from the busy days!
  • @Kay Ogundimu Good effort man it's a good one to try and overcome thats for sure. I know a few people who actually jumped in and it seemed to open up a lot of opportunities for them!

Thanks for the link I'll take a look at this now!
  • Learnig Affinity software, almost for free, good replacement of Adobe Rip-Off : )
  • @Matt Wilson I'm pretty much the same, I've been shying away from it for years but I figured it's best to tackle it head on.

Here's a link to the one i'm taking, i'm only a day in but It's really interesting and it's made easy enough to, disect, digest and practice.
    https://www.coursera.org/learn/public-speaking

    I say go for it!
  • @Kay Ogundimu Oh nice improving on public speaking is a good one. I am terrible at it to the point that I've turned down a few speaking opportunities throughout my career! I should probably join one or two myself. Have you got any links?
  • @Krishna Mistry-Lubbock I don't know I personally think there is more too it than just buying and selling. I think it includes the overal experience so how intuitive the design is i.e somethings you want to click on but if it doesn't work as you expected then you could argue that is bad UX. it can be quite interesting to looking into user patterns for example eye tracking on pages etc. I have limited knowledge here but remember UX being quite interesting when I studied it for a while!
  • @Matt Wilson i think it is hard to understand especially the wireframes etc. I think unless you have a buying selling business it wont work as well is that right??
  • I've been tuning in to some amazing design campaigns that have come about from this pandemic, It's great to see the design world coming together!

I've also been thinking of ways to develop as a person and enrolled on an online public speaking course. Mostly to find ways to engage an connect with others. Absolutley bricking it, but should be fun, hopefully!
  • @Marcos Behrens Yeah I've noticed a huge increase on webinars, yet to attend one but I'm sure theres tons of good information out there! There are a ton of great resources to learn AE now, if you need any pointers give me a shout.
  • @Matt Wilson luckily my camera has a corresponding phone app so I use that as a remote and then I use a timer so I have time to put the phone down and pose. Pretty challenging at times ensuring the focus is right :)
  • @Tamara Lawrence Sounds like a good plan, I hope your home setup is working out nicely. How are you directing yourself, are you using a large mirror? I was useless at setting up all the lighting for my shoots when I studied photography back in the day, don't think I quite grasped the technical aspects of it and was more interested in the touching up part in Photoshop!
