Does anyone have any advice for connecting with other creatives, self promo, and growing your audience?

I am really bad at self promo and marketing so I'd like to reach out for any help and/or ideas people have for getting better at this!

What do you do? Have you read or heard anything lately about connecting with people online or off? What about growing your following? Tell me your secrets!

  • Definitely social media - my favourites are Instagram and Pinterest because they're so visual. You can share your work, share some 'behind the scenes' stuff, connect with others and get inspired. YouTube is good too, creating tutorials is a great way to build trust in your audience.
  • instagram is great for illustration promo as I'm sure you know- it's worth treating it like work, so sit down and spend a day drafting out posts so they're ready to post, then set an upload schedule and follow it. Helps to get your name out there! Don't be afraid to hashtag everything as well- really helps grow your brand and get you out there.

Last thing- paid ads are no bad thing, and if targeted well can be both cheap and effective.
  • Thank you both for your kind responses!

Alan, I'll definitely try this as I move forward.

William, I'm attempting to promote my work as a business with the intention of taking on clients on a freelance basis. I work in illustration and painting.
  • I think if you are not comfortable reaching out directly you could start liking and commenting on their work.’tell them areas you like, ask them questions about how and why they did certain things. It helps engage in a softer way and shows you really are interested in other people and their work. Once you do this a number of times and the person is engaging back with ask them what they would do in your position and they wanted to start working with other creatives. Who knows you May get so much feedback it provides you an insight to understanding ways to do what you want. You could document the process in a blog, a podcast or on here and that would draw more people to you and ultimately what you want to do.

Hope there is something in my reply that helps. Good luck!

    Regards
    Alan
