Does anyone have any tips on how you would work out your pay structure for illustrating a book?

Hey! I've just agreed to work on a freelance job ililustrating a childrens book- first kind of project like this. Would be so grateful if anyone had any tips on how you would charge/work out your pay structure for this kind of project?

Thanks so much!

  • You can get a flat fee for your illustrations, or paid as an advance on royalties. What is a royalty? The royalty is the illustrator’s or writer’s percentage of the money made from the sales of their book. The details of the percentages are all outlined in the contract for the book. Usually when a book finds a publisher, it is the publisher who draws up contracts for the writer and the illustrator and decides the procents of the royalties.
  • Hey there Charlotte!
Great to see you using our Asks Hub :-)
Looks like you're looking for advice from other illustrators? Just a quick tip, you'll get a better response with your Asks if you tag relevant professions on your post. For example tagging 'Illustrator' will notify all illustrators to help you answer your question.
Hope that helps and have a lovely week,
