  • 99designs have loads of blogs and resources that may be useful … including mine! https://99designs.co.uk/blog/design-history-movements/the-history-of-typography/
  • @Stefano De Marco Although “Counterpunch: making type in the sixteenth century, designing typefaces now by Fred Smeijers” is a really good, wouldn’t suggest it as a go to for someone new to type design.

It’s actually really hard to find as it’s out of print and resale is £200+ I spent 3 years trying to find that book at a original price managed to get a copy at below £200.

Other concern it can be quite scary for someone new to type design and typography, just from recommending to people said it was hard to understand.

  • Hi Jess,

one of the best book, in my opinion, about typeface design is
"Counterpunch: making type in the sixteenth century, designing typefaces now" by Fred Smeijers.

Also, have a look on this other book by Gerard Unger "Theory of Type Design", it is also another good resource.
  • The Thames and Hudson Manual of Typography, although published ages ago, helped me understand why we do certain things in typography and how it applies. I believe you can get it as a pdf. Also look into Inge Druckery Teaching to See, very helpful as well.
