For the sound editors on The Dots: what do you think of Logic Pro?

I'm writing an article on Final Cut Pro for my blog and I would be very interested to know what the sound editors of Logic Pro think, especially when it comes to video post production.

In your opinion is it comparable to ProTools and Fairlight or does it still need to be improved?

Thank you.

  • @Michelangelo Torres It is a pleasure. Hope my answer helped. I can see Apple developing new features for Logic Pro as they did with FCP only a few years ago. In short film/low/nobudget productions, it is very much the wild west of things. The higher up the ladder you go though, is where pro tools becoems prominent. Have a good day and speak soon.
  • Hey @Liam Cameron thank you very much for your response, you were really accurate, detailed and thorough, I couldn't have asked for better.

I suspected that Logic Pro had some shortcomings compared to its competitors, but I needed confirmation from an industry professional like you. Thanks again!

In each it would be interesting to know what Apple's future plans for Logic Pro are, we'll see.
  • hello @Michelangelo Torres , Logic Pro like it's counterparts, Pro Tools, Reaper, Reason, Nuendo, Cubase amongst numerous others, is in reality just a tool. It is what you do with the tool that matters.
However, saying this, Pro Tools, In the post production sound world (television, film & commercials) is the primary DAW software used by professionals in the industry. It is a vital piece of kit that all sound editors, dubbing mixers, re-recording mixers and alike must know in order to collaborate with other creatives. Logic Pro, used throughout the music production world, doesn't quite have the same audio editing capabilities as say Pro Tools or even Nuendo. The video engine within Logic Pro is also seriously lacking. I'd say the real challenger to Pro Tools right now is Nuendo. Pro Tools have dropped the ball in the last 5 years or so. Transforming their business model and their customer support services not for the better. Nuendo now comes with surround sound readiness which can only be found in Pro Tools HD systems, a fair big step up from the standard version.
I can see Nuendo, in the next 5-10 years really asking the question to sound editors, mixers etc... of what they would like from a DAW. Already, a few colleagues of mine have transitioned away from Pro Tools as their primary DAW and shifted to Nuendo. Those colleagues still use Pro Tools regularly when collaborating with other sound professionals and facilities for compatibility and seamless transfer of assets but, any work that doesn’t require them to be based in Pro Tools is completed on Nuendo from start to finish.
Logic Pro is very user friendly, like most of Apple's products, but for me lacks a number of key features that most sound professionals need in order to do their job's properly. Hope my reply helps.
