Have you used Creative Commission for your freelance briefs? Is it worth the subscription fee?

  • I had the subscription for few months but my impression is that you need to have a very strong and identifiable style and then be hired for that. Also have in portfolio exactly what they are looking for.
  • Hey Olive, I am also a long standing member of CC and I would say it is worth it. As Steve says the competition is fierce, especially as it has grown over the last couple of years. However I have made some great contacts and worked for some amazing artists through CC. If you can handle rejection & tight deadlines it is worth a sign up! Just find those artists & labels you do connect with to create good working relationships.
  • Hi Olive,

I'd say yes, for the money it's well worth it. Competition is fierce but that stands to reason as almost everyone wants to do creative work in the music industry.

Over the last 2 years (I think that's how long I've been signed up) I must have applied for maybe a100 or so jobs and landed maybe 5-6, so the numbers are comparable to sending out mailshots in terms of conversions. However, one of the clients I landed is a label and now sends me briefs on a fairly regular basis and account for maybe 30% of my turnover.

When you see the work of the creatives hired to work on briefs you missed out on it seems that you often need to have a portfolio which exactly mirrors the look the label are after, having oodles of skill and the ability to match a look doesn't seem to sway folk, which is a shame, not so many risk takers these days I guess!? ...

One thing, if you do sign up and land gigs is to make sure you include a kill fee in your discussions, some artists and labels are decent and if they change direction and don't want your style will still pay, others won't - thankfully they seem to be in the minority but better to cover yourself.

If you can justfiy the outlay then I would say that for the sake of £100 it's well worth using it for a year and see what happens, there's a lot of cool work to be made for a lot of interesting people! Your style may be the very thing they are looking for and you will never look back! :)
