Hello, could I have some advice on how to create a professional photography portfolio? Thank you

  • Wix is a brilliant - plenty of lovely, responsive templates and easy to use. Also the key is to edit your work! Don't just put anything - always ask yourself a question 'would I be proud to show this in my interview' and if the answer is no, ditch it. I've interviewed quite few people who were ashamed of some of their pieces, and quickly brushed over them, and that really shows and knocks their confidence. And if you're not confident in your work, your potential client also won't be...
  • Hi Natalie,

Sorry to start with a question but it depends on what you want your portfolio to achieve, if you purely want to show case work with no bigger purpose put in the works that excites you and tells the stories you want to tell.

If it's a commercial portfolio the work needs to be relevant to your target audience - and not necessarily stray too far away from what you want your audience to see. For example there is no point in having product shots in a portfolio aimed at a family portrait market/audience. For a commercial portfolio remember what matters to you may not matter to your your audience.

If you are shooting documentary have wide range of stories that show your points of view, interests and arguments. In this type of portfolio what matters to you is what matters because it's your voice, and what you want to show others is what counts.

There is no reason why you should not have a number of portfolios for different audiences.

Always use your best work at every stage and compromise on nothing!

    Gavin
