Hello wise Dotters, is it way too early to apply for jobs that I’d like to start in September?

I need to know my work schedule so that I can plan any childcare I’d need in advance!

Would agencies/companies just tell me to go away and apply later in the year or would they understand and hold a position for me? (This would be my first creative job!so a junior position! Gulp!) Thanks in advance! 😁

  • Absolutely not! It'sn good to get on the radar of those organisations you'd be interested in partnering with. Then, you have more time to build that relationship. I think most companies are used to waiting at least 1-month before the start date because of notice periods. My partner had a 3-month notice period when he last switched jobs, so the right employer will wait. x
  • Hi Anna,

Long story short definitely start it now. The long story part is recruitment is hot now, but July / August will be pretty much quiet and it's fairly the same in case of projects for most of business. So I can absolutely imagine that most of employers open to you start just in September and you will have definiteky more opportunities now than fi. you start to look for in August.
  • Hello! I suspect this is one of those things that is quite employer-dependent, but sometimes companies will be happy to wait once they are convinced they've found the right person.

I know of at least one person who's been recently hired with a start date of August, so that's not too far off September really! Once you factor in the unpredictable nature of application and interview schedules, I'd say it's definitely worth getting applications in and talking to recruiters.
  • Hey Anna

It'll be a good idea to connect with recruiters / agencies and let them know you over-arching plan.

This may allow/nudge them, into keeping you in mind for the 4th quarter. While many people would have returned from their summer breaks many others will be planning their christmas / seasonal departures and that is where you could come in.

We're also in a hybrid work world so for every organisation that requires you to be in offfice/at your desk, there are a growing number that are very flexible. I have also seen a small trend in CoreHours, 7-3pm, 10-4pm etc etc.

Now is the time wire frame what truly works for you, you might not get everything you wish for but you may get what you at least deserve to ensure that your life has a balance and it's not just a balancing act.

  • Hi Anna, although I don't have any experience with the childcare situation, purely from a job perspective I've not come across roles where there recrutiment process lasts as long as 4 months.

But, and it depends on the specificity of the role your looking for, you may be able to find a postion that, although recruiting now, doesn't begin until later in the year.
Alternatively, you may find a very understanding employer who beleives in you and will keep the position open, should you be successful.

It's a matter of looking around and then negotiating when the time comes. :)
