Hey Guys, I'd like to create a short film about the 'real' London but I don't really know where to start. Can anyone provide any advice?

This is a small project that I'm doing for my editing portfolio, I created a basic storyboard to orgainise my thoughts on the types of shots and I've researched locations.

Any advice on how to get started and how to find a videographer or camera person would be great. This is new to me so please reach out of you have any questions. I'm hoping to build strong relationships as well for any future work.

  • Research what the content is going to be - perhaps talk to a Blue Badge guide (I can recommend one). Pay a really good scriptwriter to create a narrative thread. Too often there are short films out there that are just a visual essay. It needs to be so much more cohesion of narrative and visual content. As for videographers, there are many many excellent ones out there, but consider that you may not be able to beg too many favours and freebies. Try and find yourself a producer - it'll make all the difference.
  • @Peter Jobson Thanks a lot for your advice. I have some more work to do so best not to try and get a DoP or Videographer just yet. I'm lacking in direction at the moment so I'll focus on this first. Really appreciate your advice.
  • My advice is to have a clear idea of the kind of story you want to tell (documentary, reportage, travel video).
Having storyboard and location scouting done is a good starting point, the next step should be crafting a story around the work you've done until now and giving the narration a specific 'mood'
  • I know a few people who may in interested in assisting you with camera work in London. They are currently apprentices in the film making space.

Storyboard everything, every shot. Keep it photographic in the beginning and don’t get too bogged down in movement at first. Once the photographic storyboard is down then move onto thinking about camera panning and manoeuvres. Focus on storytelling and how to make it compelling. Short films need to be interesting and compelling throughout
