Hi everyone, back again with another magazine question!!

I have been running Haste Magazine for almost three years now and have loved every second of it. But I want to take it to the next level and create a bi-annual print version.

I understand this is an incredible amount of work and will take a lot of time, all of which I am willing and prepared for. But any insights or advice on creating publications would be much appreciated!!!!

  • There are so many aspects that go into creating a print magazine, and you really want a publishing designer on board - an actual specialist rather than a graphic designer who claims to make magazines. That way you have someone on board who knows how to create publications and can help you out with advice and experience.

A really great resource, however, would be to look at Issues 96 & 97 of Eye Magazine. These were special editions that looked at so many aspects of magazine production, and not just from a design point of view.

  • Hiya, Sophie! I’m making a print mag at the moment and we’re almost ready to go to print. It’s been hard work, but really fun. One thing that really helped me, after figuring out with the designer how we want the mag to look and feel, was having a consultation with a printing company (I used Park Printing). It was super helpful as they gave me advice about paper types that would suit the content of the mag, what sizes are best, what colours will work in print and which colours won’t work so well etc etc. After speaking to them I felt really spurred on and focused.
