Hi! I’ve finished my intense graphic design course at Shillington. Could anyone give me feedback on my website? https://josiejackson.co.uk

  • @Allison Tanenhaus honestly thank you so so much for taking out so much time and having a look through my portfolio, I am so grateful. These are fantastic points and I am making all the changes asap. You've been a great help! I'm glad you like my work :)
  • @Luke Freeman Luke this is fab, thank you. Really helpful re the mock ups, I was unsure about how much to do this, so I will review my work today and edit the amount. Excellent advice.
  • @Geoffrey Bunting Thanks so much for these great points. I completely agree, i'm looking forward to setting myself some more self initiated projects more and continuing to develop! Thank you for taking the time to look through my work and giving me guidance :)
  • @Morphe Digital Design thank you so much for this invaluable advice. Great idea about my name at the top of each page I will change this. Also super helpful about adding my womenswear designs, I was unsure whether to add these in or not, so this is so helpful. Really appreciate you taking the time out to help me :)
  • @Morphe Digital Design
Thanks so much for this information. I have to let you know I concur with several of the points you make here and others may require some further review, but I can see your viewpoint about Custom Reed Diffuser Boxes.

  • Really nice work! I agree, make your name more prominent so it's clear what the JJ represents.

    A few more thoughts:

    1) Can you add a photo to your About page? It can help to forge a more personal connection.

    2) For the Instagram and LinkedIn links on your About page, have them open in a new window (like you do in your top nav with the icons).

    3) Your name is showing up as "Holly Jackson" in the browser bar (like above the URL, as the title of the site), which is confusing!

    4) I think that underneath the title of each project (on its own page), it could be useful to tag what the project entailed. Like "branding • out of home • social campaign" or what have you. Otherwise, it's a bit overwhelming to try to parse out what each project is about and how it reflects your skills. This way there's top level orientation that also makes it very clear what your capabities are, specific to each example.

    5) You can also apply that kind of text overlay to each project on your homepage. Otherwise, I was hovering expecting to get some info as to what I would be clicking on—like "Album Art" or "Instagram Campaign" or what have you.

    6) Back to the About page: there's a weird line break in your bolded top sentence. I'd close that up (unless it's intentional—in which case, jazz it up to make that more obvious).

Excellent job on your assignments! All of the above are minor tweaks to showcase your great work and bring that presentation to the next level. :)

    Good luck!
  • Great start in branding yourself, leaping into a website. Regards to the portfolio you have nicer work that illustrates your calibre. Only thing I may say in the future is ease up on the mockups as they set the work back.

Quote: “Whacking your projects on the same fake billboards or vinyl cover templates that everyone else does visually places your work in a sea of generic things – it makes it harder for you to stand out.”

  • Yeah, this looks good. Well-presented, simple. A lot of recent graduates try a bit too hard with their website. Kudos also for using your own name - many make the mistake of trying to present themselves as a studio rather than focussing on the power of their personal brand.

It's a great starting off point.

What I will say is that your work looks pretty indistinct from other students and recent graduates. I would find it difficult to distinguish your work from that of other designers of your level, which is something that is happening A LOT right now. So I would advise you look to develop yourself a bit more beyond the academic styles you already have: self-initiate projects in different disciplines, find your own voice. That's a great way to set yourself apart from your peers.

    Otherwise, good work.
