How do you manage mental health and work?

What do you do to wind down from work and take care of yourself? As someone with BPD I have always found it hard to seperate the two and really wind down - What are your tips and tricks?

  • Yoga helps me to deal with stress and everyday problems. In general, I decided to take care of my health and figure. It helps to relax. And thanks to the site https://lasta.app/features/meal-planning-app/ I learned about an application that helps maintain proper nutrition. I chose a diet for myself and planned my diet. It has a very positive effect on my mood and I forgot what stress is.
  • I find talking to someone I trust and feel comfortable round helps relieve my anxious thoughts when I’m in a rutt about something
  • This one is a hard one TBF I manage myself the best way that I can by trying to be GENTLE with myself. And that in itself is hard to do when you feel under pressure, taking a break is the first thing I do. Allowing myself time as I’m not competing with anyone but the person I see in the mirror❤️

It is important to know how you function.
Some people take breaks every day, but I find it extremely impossible to do that... I just have to be switched on all the time when in work mode.

But then there comes a point after a month or 2 when I become less productive (easily distracted). I lean into the distraction as my break (which usually happens for approx 2 weeks). At first, I feel bad for getting distracted, but then I remind myself that it is okay to pay attention to other things.

Before I know it, I naturally get curious about a new strategy and curiously pursue it... before I know it, I'm back to work mode effortlessly.

That's my natural pattern, and I have embraced it. Find what yours is and embrace it.
  • Agree with @paul_hunter that something else to focus on is good. It can be easy to cycle events from the day and feel that work has somehow travelled home with you. Finding something to occupy the mind fully until it switches from work mode can be helpful. Each time the mind tries to go back to work gently guide it back to the present moment. Be self-compassionate. It is good to find something that you enjoy doing/can look forward to, perhaps a relaxing hobby, something that makes you feel like you. It will be different for everyone.

During the day the brain gets into the work groove, like a golfer trying to get the ball out of the bunker you want to move the mind to the open grassy area where you can feel free! It is possible, with practice it gets easier.

    All the best,
    Clare
  • Getting up and away from the desk helps immensely, so I make a point of always going out for a walk to get some sun and fresh air. Also, having a hobby or interest that breaks you away from the screen is no bad thing. I've been trying to learn a second language for the past two years, and it's great to both stretch myself mentally and give me something other than work to focus on. Beyond that, I also make a point of cooking often and going to the gym. These are all simple things you can do to work on and improve your mental health (except for the language one, which I find extremely difficult!). I hope you're doing okay. All the best.
