How long have you been independent?
I'm interested in how long people here (those of you who are freelancing or self-employed) have been working for yourself. Let me know in the comments. Years? Months? Hours?
Even if you've jumped around different ways of working, sum up the total.

- I worked as an Independent between 2011 and 2013, but I guess I wasn't mature enough to manage the process then and I failed. Because I made the mistake that many creatives make. I used to see being an Independent as just the time it took to get a good job offer. When I made this decision again in 2018, I embraced being Independent as an identity, not a process, and everything worked out.
- Over 20 years with a portfolio of clients, and with some although I am freelance I have to be PAYE.
- I have been doing it/independent for just over a year now but been drawing for over 6 years
- @Matthew KnightI've witnessed a dramatic dumbing down of the industry; it used to be a 'closed shop', closely guarded by those who came up through the ranks and had the required skills in grammar, syntax etc etc . Just read any newspaper today and the mistakes ae legion. Entire subs departments have gone and journalists are expected to sub their own copy. It's tragic. Rates have stagnated, which is just plain sad. Today I'm writing at rates I was offered 15 years years ago. You don't go into journalism to make mmoeny. Whinge over!
- @Pete Brady fantastic - what things still surprise you after all that time?
- @Andreea Costache amazing! has it got more fun each year?
- @Gillian Upton what have you seen change most significantly in that time?
- Only 26 years to date and it's the best ting I ever did!
- 8 years
- 14 years so far
