How to gain copywriting experience ?

Hello, I want to enter the world of copywriting but have no experience and at a current loss at where to start. Ah, it’s scary! Luckily it can be done remotely and have I have given some thought to approaching companies in exchange for my free time, however, if there is any advice out there that someone could suggest, I’m all ears! I also don’t know how to build a portfolio, does it have to be a website?

  • I have done a course on udemy that has helped improve my copywriting skills. It was for b2b content: https://www.udemy.com/course/b2b-copywriting/
  • If you're Gen Z, check out this amazing Gen-Z Copywriting Community:

  • Hi Gracie,

You could create spec campaigns to build a portfolio - often it's hard to make these up from scratch so if you're struggling, check out this year's D&AD New Blood briefs and/or the exercises on Read Me's site.

  • I've interviewed lots of junior writers and it's always the ones with interesting side projects that stand out. Write about what you love, write jokes on Twitter, and read lots. An original honest CV helps too. Good luck.

  • Billboard images.
The final image in your collection should leave the customer with a lasting memory of your product.
Use a mix of stock photography, context and your products’ strapline to help them remember the qualities of your item and motivate them to make the purchase.

  • Hey Gracie,

Don’t be scared - copywriting can be so exciting! And being proactive and productive will help keep you positive.

Build a portfolio of spec work to get you going. D&AD New Blood briefs and the exercises on Read Me’s website should give you plenty of ideas.

You don’t need a website but you do need somewhere to show your work so upload it here on The Dots.

If you’re on Twitter, check out the #CopywritersUnite hashtag to find other copywriters to connect with for further support/

Best of luck - and happy writing!

  • Hey @Gracie Davies, there are loads of books and resources out there with an intro to copywriting. Totally agree it can be a bit overwhelming. I'd recommend getting some practice in away from clients (free or not) just to make sure you're confident. This could be "creating a brand", volunteering or just rewriting existing copy. A mentor or teacher might come in handy, but there are a lot of courses out there that promise the earth and don't really deliver.

Have you got any writing experience? Would you want to be self employed or work for someone else? A grad or entry level role in copywriting, working for a company or agency, might help you if you're starting from scratch

Your portfolio can be a Google doc, presentation, website, Pinterest board, Linkedin profile or online portfolio service that you use - tbh anything that helps you organise and display your work. You don't need to set up a website straight away, that's something that can come over time when you're more established and ready to invest.
