How would I approach art directors to freelance/collaborate?

Hey all, I’m an artist/illustrator slowly breaking into the field but I’m not entirely sure how I would approach art directors with my portfolio? I read cold emailing is a good method but is this proven true and does anyone have a good template to go by?
Thank you :)

  • No harm in approaching art directors and emailing a PDF or website link to your portfolio directly. You could also try approaching agency art buyers who are often an art directors first port of call when looking for new/upcoming illustrators. There's also the option of approaching an illustration agency and dicusing representation. They'll do all the leg work, but will also give you a good steer on what work to have in your portfolio. They will take a cut on any comissions you get if they end up representing you.
