  • The Design World Is difficult as fuck, but not impossible! You can do it. As I have said before, the best designers in the world don't even use computers! There are many untalented people who are successful. So don't worry. There is room for everyone.
  • Really want me to be 100% honest, I love design. Where design is as a cultural ethics, it has become blurred and remaining a designer or make an income.

Design is at a strange place, we’re at a time where designers are replaced by creatives it’s more about creativity over craft ideas are worth more than the design. Other aspect as mentioned is Ai (Not Adobe Illustrator) but not everyone has access to it with free online design tools or integrated design tools into social media accounts, we’ve enter a DIY culture of design where clients can design for themsleves i.e. Adobe Express https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PDr_MmlXBfA or Canva https://www.canva.com/en_gb/

What is clear that as designers is less in need, it relies based the company or business model knows how to sell design a package/product to a brand or company to buy into their rebranding/campaign/advertising which there is a urgency to market commercially that can only work if a company can afford that service. That is done a team of people.

Rather being 40 and learning to become a designer setup your own practice and learn design form the team around you. You’ll make money know how design is made.

  • @Luke Freeman ✓✐ to be fair most people say don't do their job, whatever it is! Jobs are a pain in the neck a lot of the time
  • It's a tricky one Carrie, if that's where your passion and talent lies then pursue.. Shillington is prob a good start to get a grounding! Absorb yourself in creative networking events and design festivals for inspiration.

Bookmark design blogs and font foundries religiously. Invest in a mac and creative cloud.

Whilst the creative industries isn't as well paid/valued as other sectors it's definitely more exciting/rewarding and the UK is probably still at the forefront.

Find the clients that excite you, create some amazing work then keep repeating.. it is probably the only industry that is less discriminitive of gender, age, race and judged on your own talent.

If you stay ahead of the curve, invest in the right skills there's no reason to you still can't be practicing design (in some form) well into your 70's.. before AI takes over :)
  • First of all this is fantastic news. If you want to study graphic design I suggest you go to https://www.shillingtoneducation.com/uk/

I know a few success stories.

I transitioned from a project manager to a Product Designer 10 years ago and it was the best decision I ever made.

Happy to jump on a call and talk to you about my experience.
  • Study the professionals and well established artists, practice daily to improve your creative process and to improve your deadline management.

And beware: you will find A LOT of competition - even those who have zero creative initiatives believe they can do better than those who spend years learning and practising simply to avoid paying them. It can be very demoralising.
