I've always found it challenging creating logo and identities for myself compared to when I do it for my clients. How are your experiences?

Here is my latest visual identity I did for a family project.

  • It's 100% harder to brand yourself. I found myself, changing my logo every year or so, when I first started out and was still developing a style. Even now, It's been a good five years since I created my current logo, and some days I'll look at it with content, and others I'll despise it.

I think, as designers, we have that urge inside of us to keep creating, and because we see our own logo most – if not every – day, that makes us question it, and consider wheather it could be better.

I have a feeling that it could be an endless cycle!
  • Your project presentation is immaculate, great work!

As for the challenge of developing your own logo, I think it's a number of things:

Firstly, it's not likely that you develop a brief for yourself in the same way as for your clients. Did you analyse your service, establish a moodboard and establish what your logo will achieve in terms of your personal/business goals? Chances are, no.

If you did, hats off to you. But then how do you get out of the concepting phase? As a logo designer, you'll likely provide two to five of your best concept designs to your clients; they won't know about the other 100 that you created beforehand. However, designing for yourself means you can't limit yourself in that way, you're always aware of how many choices are open to you.

Finally, you're a creative! You'll be inspired by many different things by the hour, inspirations which often conflict with the design direction you started with. You'll seemingly never reach the end before wanting to try a different approach.

It's tough, right?! I think the best approach is to think in a different way about your visual identity. When we design for clients, we try to give them a timeless brand system that will last far longer than we will. However, you as a designer and service provider are marketable BECAUSE you evolve; you stay on-top of design trends and you adapt your visual style to suit a range of clients. To that end, shouldn't your brand be constantly evolving too?

Think about designing for the 'Xavier of Now' and expect that there will be a completely different brand identity that is better suited for 'Xavier of 2022'.
  • Every designer is never 100% satisfied with their work. Thats the way it will always be. When your creating work for someone else, they get the final pick and thats the end of it. When i work for myself there is always self criticism and so it will always be a WIP somewhere on your desktop lool :)
