Looking for advice on how to get into editorial illustration?

  • Hi Ruth, I think @Justin Poulter said it very well.

You should absolutely get a portfolio set up and make it easy to find - pick out your best projects that show a range and also the devlopment (how you 'solved the problem'). If you are lacking work, make up some projects/set yourself tasks and just mention on the site that its a speculative project.

Familiarise yourself with the styles of various publications, contact art directors, reach out and email - the worst that will happen is no response.

Good luck. Don't give up! x

  • Hi Ruth,

The most important thing about editorial illustration is showing that you can take an often complicated idea and distil it into a simple conceptual illustration that entices the reader and gives them a sense of what the article is about.

I can't see any of your work or a link to your work on your profile, so you may be doing this already....

I would suggest looking at magazines that use illustration like The Observer, The Economist or The FT to familiarise yourself with how illustration is used to accompany articles.
