Looking for collaborators on a zine

So, fairly simple: I have an idea for a zine that I want to work on in-between freelance projects whilst in lockdown.

I would like it to be a longer project, because I really want to take the time to create/curate a good mix of content -- writing, illustration, art, photography and maybe even work-in-progresses -- with the intention of creating at least one print issue, but I'm also toying with the idea of having an online edition which could be published sooner/more frequently, and then gather different content from online issues over time and make a special print edition.

The theme would be mental health, or more specifically mental illness and creativity. I have already noticed in my mental health community that artistic expression is what gets us through and reaching out and sharing our work and supporting each other long distance seems to be helping a lot of people as well. So my intention with the zine is something similar: bring creatives with various mental health struggles together and showcase the upside to mental illness/mental health conditions, i.e. the creative expression. It would give the contributors something positive to focus on and channel their creative energy into in-between other projects, but it would also be a collection of positivity and creative expression that I think would resonate with everyone. (So even though I always have "End Stigma" at the back of my mind, I see that as a byproduct not the sole purpose of the zine.)

If anyone is interested in collaborating- at whatever scale and whatever capacity, or simply has something they've already created/written that they would like to contribute, let me know!

  • Hi Ida,

Your zine projects sound truly interesting. I think mental health and creativity are deeply connected, and art helps a lot with the struggle.

I'm a graphic designer and illustrator. I would love to create content about how to cope with mental illness, specifically anxiety, but I'm also happy to collaborate in any other different way if needed.

  • @Victoria Gill No strict deadline at the moment, I'm scouting different places for collaborators and content - I'm happy to read outlines and roigh drafts though, so you can send me whatever you have when you have it!
  • @Ida Thomasdotter Yes I would love to create a piece on body acceptance during isolation. There has been a really big push for this in recovery community since lockdown and diet culture has dominated mainstream social media

  • @Victoria Gill that's an angle I haven't got as a suggestion yet and I know it's something a lot of people can relate to, and I also know that the current lockdown situation poses a lot of challenges for people with these issues, so that feels very important - would it be possible to deal with that subject from a positive/hopeful perspective? even if the positive side is only found in recovery?
  • @Lee Lorenz Oooh that's interesting - I'm not turning away any medium as long as it fits thematically, so I would love to read an excerpt! Email me at contact@idathomasdotter.com
