MY STORY IN RED
This project is a visual and narrative exploration that intertwines my Nigerian heritage with my experiences in Wales, offering a deep reflection on identity, culture, and belonging. Inspired by personal memories, such as watching my mother wrap her gele with pride, this project is a celebration of resilience and the beauty inherent in cultural traditions. A powerful image of my mother from 1999, elegantly dressed and holding my twin sibling and me as newborns, anchors the series, serving as a poignant reminder of my roots and the foundations of my journey. Red—symbolic of love, loss, celebration, and longing—serves as a unifying thread throughout the project, connecting cultural symbols from Nigeria, such as the gele and filá, with the lived experiences of Black Welsh individuals. The red dragon on the Welsh flag, representing strength and heritage, parallels this theme, highlighting the convergence of migration, cultural identity, and the sense of belonging. Through My Story in Red, I invite viewers to engage with the shared human experience of navigating identity, embracing resilience, and forging connections through culture.
