New email...yes! new job, you read: "It's to build up your portfolio" vs "paid job" How do we feel about this especially now?

I'm curious because I've agreed to work in both situations and during these unprecedented times I'm wondering what your opinions are on this topic.

With that being said would you even consider working for no pay these days? In what conditions would you say yes to an unpaid job? And finally how would you reply to an email that goes something like this?..

  • I don't do unpaid gigs unless it's a true barter system and even exchange of value (which is rare) OR if I'm the one going offering my services pro-bono (it's usually a cause I really believe in and even then, the client gets an invoice with a pro-bono discount line item).

    Basically, GET PAID.
  • @Michelangelo Torres Yes we all need to eat! It's almost like saying this pandemic has changed the value of the work people do in the creative industry. But in many industries it's not business as usual. How will money change hands in return for a service if the cash flow is a major issue especially for smaller businesses?

  • I personally feel annoyed when I read "due the current covid-19-related situation and blah, blah, blah" when somebody proposes unpaid gigs. Because of the "current" situation, freelancers need pay gigs because (shocking news!) they are still have to pay bills and rent.
