Potluck, the zine I run all about cooking, eating and sharing food is collaborating with SPOONFEED and we want your food poetry! (Paid)

SUBMISSION DEADLINE: 31st August 2021, 23.59pm

We’re looking for submissions of food poetry to Potluck and SPOONFEED’s first collaborative zine, on the theme of Birthday Party!

Potluck and SPOONFEED were born in May 2020, completely independently of one another — call it fate or hunger. Like long-lost twins, we’ve discovered each other’s existence, and teamed up to coedit a pocket issue to celebrate our shared first birthdays just past.

BIRTHDAY PARTY: think feasting, indulging — think your Mum slaving over a cake in secret; think a horde of hungry children; think family and friends coming together to mark a year gone by. Tables pushed together to seat another few. The garden party; the winter birthday. Overladen paper plates. Punch bowls. A chocolate fountain.

INGREDIENTS

We’re looking to publish poetry only which is food-themed or -related (think implements, appetite, absence of food), and which evokes or surprises. Take the theme as nothing more than a suggestion — really, we just want the issue to be a celebration: of food, of poetry, and of collaboration.

Poems should not have been previously published.

METHOD
Please submit no more than three poems in a .docx file format.

Submissions should be sent to editor.spoonfeed@gmail.com with the subject heading SUBMISSION.

Please include in the body of the email:

your name as you wish it to appear in print
your preferred pronouns
your Twitter and Instagram handles, if you have them
the name(s) of your poems
A short (50-word) biography about you is also welcome — you’ll need one if your work is published.

No simultaneous submissions, and please don’t submit more than once per submission window. We will get back to you as soon as possible once submissions have closed.

We are committed to representing the diversity of food and food poetry, and as such particularly welcome submissions from any writer in an underrepresented and/or minority group. We also welcome submissions from those who are just beginning their writing journey. We understand the submissions process can seem daunting, but we’re happy to help you in any way we can. If you have any questions or need any support, please email us at hello@potluckzine.co.uk

Note: SPOONFEED is not a specifically vegan publication, but does subscribe to vegan values. We therefore ask submissions to be respectful/compassionate in any mentions of animal products. We do of course appreciate nuance and ambiguity.

Note 2: SPOONFEED and Potluck are food-positive publications. Body shaming, etc., won’t be published (obviously). Neither will work expressing or platforming views which are racist, sexist, ableist, homophobic, transphobic, or otherwise harm marginalised peoples and communities.

Note 3: This issue will be *in print* and contributors will be paid for their work (hooray!). Check out Potluck’s statement ‘how we pay our contributors’ over on their site [hyperlink: potluckzine.co.uk] under ‘ABOUT US’ for more information about how this works.

Note 4: 10% of the cost of each issue will be donated to The Trussell Trust, as per Potluck’s funding model potluckzine.co.uk/how-our-business-model-works
