VIDEO EDITORS Trying to edit a 140GB file (w. my 32RAM Mac) but struggling, proxy keeps failing and playback is nonexistent, what can I do?

Hey, I'm currently editing a documentary for which the interview file is 140GB (25 minutes in 4K) and I'm going insane lol (note to self: ask the DOP to cut in between questions) . I've managed to create proxies in Media Encoder for all the other footage, but this one will say like 48h then eventually fail. I've tried multiple times, best outcome so far is one which said failed but then, after I went back in Premiere, had the little proxy watermark and smooth playback for the first 2 mintues. After that it was just stuck on one frame.

Anyone with ideas? Pleasee

  • @Malin Fritz To convert footage to low resolution, you can use video editing software that allows you to adjust the resolution and export the video in a lower resolution. Here are the general steps you can follow using common video editing software:
    1. Import the footage: Open your video editing software and import the video footage that you want to convert to low resolution.
    2. Create a new project: Create a new project or sequence and adjust the settings to the desired low resolution. For example, in Adobe Premiere Pro, you can create a new sequence, and under the "Sequence Settings" menu, adjust the frame size and pixel aspect ratio to a lower resolution.
    3. Drag the footage to the timeline: Drag the footage from the media bin to the timeline.
    4. Adjust the scale of the footage: You may need to adjust the scale of the footage to fit the new lower resolution. In Premiere Pro, you can do this by selecting the footage on the timeline and adjusting the "Scale" property under the "Effect Controls" panel.
    5. Export the video: Once you have adjusted the resolution and scale of the footage, you can export the video in the lower resolution. In Premiere Pro, you can do this by selecting "File" > "Export" > "Media" and adjusting the export settings to the desired resolution.
The specific steps may vary depending on the video editing software you are using, but these general steps should help you convert your footage to a lower resolution.
  • @Malin Fritz so go to the Edit tab and do it from there rather than Render.
I’m not at my computer so I can’t quite remember, will double check this for you tomorrow or Monday, but will try remember it off the top of my head:

Go to edit tab, then at the top should be under one of the drop down menus (File, Edit, etc) and be a Generate Proxy command
  • @Dalano Barnes How would I do this please? When I import and rightclick the clip it only gives me the option of 'relink proxy file', there's no 'generate proxy media'
  • @Malin Fritz I’m not entirely sure if Blackmagic Proxy Generator is for blackmagic codec only (bres or whatever the file is called). You’ll probably be better off going directly into DaVinci and putting the file in then just creating the proxy in there by generating proxies
  • @Alan Parry Hi, thanks for your reply! Just copying what I said to Dalano: I've downloaded Resolve and with it came the blackmagic proxy generator, assuming that's how I would do it? Only thing is when I go to add the file they're all greyed out, as in the software won't let me upload them. They're all MOV files shot in ProRes, in case the issue is with file format?

  • @Gabriel Orentas Hi, thanks so much for your reply! Is there any other information I could give you which might give you more of an idea?
  • Convert and edit all of the low-resolution videos. Once you've finalised the flow, simply replace all of the low ress videos with high ress videos and you're ready to go! I hope this helps!!
  • You could try asking if the DOP is able to send over proxies and work from those instead.

Otherwise perhaps try another editing software specifically for that one file (DaVinci Resolve is free) and see if you can create a proxy there (or just edit in there).
