Virtual interview tomorrow (eeee!) what are your top tips?

  • A few things -
Find somewhere nice and quiet to hunker down in, make sure you're dressed fully (in case you get caught out... has this happened to me? yes), close everything on your laptop in case you have to share your screen, clean up your desktop too! Just in case. Be inquisitive about your interviewer, not interrogation style but ask them about their week and how they're doing. If its a group interview remember to mute yourself when other people are doing their bit/talking (unless its directed at you). Try not to look down at your phone etc treat it like any other interview you'd have offline - and most of all be yourself! x
  • Good thoughts here already. As someone who interviews candidates via video pretty regularly, I would add:

Don't be afraid to acknowledge any awkwardness or technical hitches. Broadband goes slow, housemates / children / pets will intrude sometimes. Honestly, if it happens, you're better to just acknowledge it rather than trying to power on through.

Close everything on your laptop other than any windows you might need to share during the interview. It just makes it a bit easier to find the right thing if you're going through a portfolio or similar.
  • @Nathan Appleyard this was super helpful, definitely will make my way down this list ! Thank you
  • The below are some good bits from a recruiter called Nikky Lyle on exactly that!

    1. Consider your backdrop, try to chose somewhere not too cluttered so they just focus only on you.

    2. Silence any notification noises which could cause distractions such as emails, messages, your phone ringing through your lap top (airplane mode can help with that.)

    3. Never be late, in person interviews you can blame the train or traffic, but online just means you can't click on a link on time, it's never a good way to start.

    4. Manage nerves by being super prepared. You don't want to just coast this, you want to leave a lasting impression.

    5. Remember half the interview is about you and your experience and the other half is about how you'll fit into the company, so make sure you allow time to discuss that.

    6. Prepare really good specific questions. Commenting on a project of theirs you love is extra brownie points and asking questions shows you're engaged with that they do.

    7. Always send a follow up email thanking them for their time and if you're keen on the role, tell them. Also resend any projects you discussed that they might have showed interest in, it keeps them engaged with you & your work post interview.

  • Make the interviewer feel important.
Ask: how did you get in this position?
What do you like about working at X?
    Love your work etc..
People like to receive attention. Be genuinely interested when asking about the company culture and its people.

    Good luck!
