What are some personal projects you've found time for this year?

My passion project is travel videography but all of my trips were cancelled for the year so I had to rethink what I could do.
I've wanted to try my hand at ASMR content for years so I decided to finally give that a go. I filmed and edited a bunch of quick things and have had a great response so far. It's also helped me unwind a bit as you really can't make calming videos if you, yourself, aren't in a calm headspace.
I'd love to hear what other people have been working on, what's helped you process all of the mess that was 2020?

  • I ended up researching, writing, editing, typsetting, designing, illustrating and branding a triple collection of data visualisation pieces that not only pushed me creatively as a designer, but also helped me learn a lot about topics I was interested in. I weirdly ended up utilising a lot of the research skills I picked up in my non designed related science degree to combine with my current design skillset, so it felt like this totally weird but kind of wonderful baby that could have only come about from my interests and my background. It is highly unlikely that I will get a brief like this in my career, and it takes a while in the industry for juniors to get this level of autonomy so I just thought , let me do something totally self-indulgent, by me, for me, directed by me, ahaha apologies for the narcissism. :/

  • I shot my most ambitious short film yet. We were due to shoot in late March but had to cancel when the lockdown came into place. Ended up shooting in July in a much better location that added a lot to the look and tone of the film so couldn't be happier!
  • Done tons of lockdown art! Had 3 real selected exhibitions this year. All on my ig @artistloadescarter or website. Www.loadescarter.com Didn’t enjoy this year but great for focusing my art.
  • almost every year a take my time for a personal project, usually a short documentary. Just before the covid I was planning to shoot the pilot of a short documentary series; the idea was to have the pilot to start searching for funds for the entire series, but for now the project is freezed.
  • I managed to translate my Italian screenplay into English, the first installment of a trilogy, and started working on the second one. I also found the time to do a few adaptations from stage to screen. I guess the greatest achievement, though, was to finally start sending my scripts out for competitions, networking and connecting to people more, to find inspiration and guidance, particularly for my documentary after my collaborator died during the first lockdown. I also started making my own almond milk and sourdough pizza dough!
  • @Geoffrey Bunting I hear that. I took a day to film a personal project at Sealife earlier this year in September. I only just published the video last week!
  • Thanks to this year I started learning Blender, improve my protfolio and had time to start a 2D animation with a friend. I also started writting a book, it will have many different stories around philosophical horror.
  • @Morphe Digital Design I'm a big proponent of self-taught skills, I've learned so much from tutorials and other creators. I definitely feel priviliged to live in a time when you can find almost any resource online.
