What are the different ways that people entered the creative industries, particularly the editing, publishing and digital marketing sectors?

Especially in the current economic climate, do successful business professionals have any advice on how to improve employability in order to best pursue a career in one of these three industries at entry/graduate level? Are there any online courses that you could recommend? Any tips that you wished you had known at the beginning of your career journey?

  • Hi there! I'm relatively early career for the UK, but I started 6 years ago in Asia. Internships are key to getting any work in publishing. There's a small number of jobs and it's too risky to hire someone they don't know. I got my first internship at a big fashion magazine by being very vocal at University and then through a guest professor's recommendation, I got the gig. I did about 5 or 6 fashion internships before my receiving my degree, all through cold emails (hundreds) or networking. If I had to give past me advice, it'd be to upskill across more (UX, graphic deisgn, coding). I hear General Assembly, Google and Coursera have a few good free courses. I'm also hoping to use this time to learn new things!
