What are your team's main challenges in remote work?

Many people were thrown in to working remotely without preparation. What do you and your team most struggle with in this new work environment?

  • @Jack Latchford As you said remote meetings were draining and even after the meeting we found our team to struggle. We started to use various apps to improve our productivity like Marsview notes. During remote meetings it was very stressful having to keep up with every conversation and engage in the discussion at the same time. I’ve found an app that helps analyze my meetings, take down notes, and highlight key information. It’s made my meetings more bearable and definitely helped save a lot of time. I hope it helps you too! https://bit.ly/MarsviewNotes
  • According to me, the main struggle was to keep up work-life balance. I spend a lot of time on online meetings with the new shift in the work norms, and I spend even longer taking down meeting minutes. • I would say the one of the main challenges for my team is integrating their home life with their work from home life! As a work-family, I feel like now, more than ever it is absolutely VITAL I help my employees to support their families. It's so tough though, as having to be a teacher, mother, and worker all at the same time... is basically impossible. And we as parents also need bosses who can empathise. I would say the best thing about lockdown has also been this challenge though - nurturing the trust and communication needed to make remote working WORK. My team wants to work and they know that their children are very important to me, so I am pleased they can tell me when it is too much, or that the kids need to sit in on a meeting.
Something that ALL consumers and employees should learn through this lockdown, is the brands that treated their employees well and those who didn't....!
  • Hi,
Really good points have been made here already. I would say that keeping people involved in the business culture, without social gatherins, ping pong tables, etc.
It is key at this moment keeping people connected not only via Zoom meetings (as there is a risk of people feeling monitorised) but through a genuine company culture and ethos. We all appreciate being part of a wider vision but this is getting more relevant these days.
    Hope this helps!
  • I would say collaboration is the toughest. We love to stick stuff on the walls, stare for a while, tear it down, start all over again. It's just been impossible to achieve all the little bits and conversations remotely. It will definitely change how we approach the workplace in the future. We've done so much successfully as a remote workforce, but looking at the office and making it less about desks and work stations and more about collaboration spaces seems like a an opportunity.
  • Communication! Lockdown is a new experience for everyone, so it is important to find ways to communicate that keep your team aligned and autonomous without negatively impacting anyone's mental health. At the start of lockdown, we were booking a lot of zoom meetings to try to ensure we were all on the same page, but we soon discovered that constant meetings were slowing productivity. While it is important to be aligned on what needs doing, it is equally important to trust your team and enable them to get on with their work without constant distractions. I've also found that it helps to include fun remote activities daily to boost morale, such as photography challenges and monthly team lunches. Hope this helps x
  • The biggest challenge that myself and my team have faced is the balance between too much communication, and not enough.

In the first few weeks it felt as if all day every day was being spent on Microsoft Teams meetings. This was good because it meant everyone was seeing one another, and communication between us all couldn't have been more. However, the downside is that it can be quite draining and tiring for people to spend a large amount of time on remote meetings.

Since then, we've been working towards finding that balance. It's important that everyone see's on another, but that's not the best approach or way of working for every single person, so finding the balance so everyone is happy has been the key
  • How do you balance async communication vs having a sense of connectivity and good vibes in team?

How do you shape the culture to be more inclusive?
  • I would say Graphic Design is much more than sitting and delivering a task so for me the biggest struggle is to have other creatives around me where I can share ideas and advices, going to exhibitions and talks. These are the main factors to be inspired and create a sort of positive environment. However I believe in creative minds and I am sure there are ways we can overcome these issues and deliver the same if not better qualities of work.
