What do you do when someone quite high profile has ripped off your idea - but you don’t quite dare ruin the relationship with them?

  • Call them out, go to press. Keep going on about it until they have to let it go. Guns blazing :)
  • Why wouldn't you want to ruin the relationship with them? Haven't they already ruined it with you?

If you don't want to / can't speak out, find someone who will on your behalf. But make sure you're absolutely certain it's purely your idea and not one that they could have coincidentally had too.
  • think this is so difficult, but its one ive had to just accepot that we are more then just one idea and that we have the capaicty for so much more. i think i would still bring it up with them because a relationship requires respect and this individual has very little for you
  • It’s a really interesting one, and the more I think about it the more it opens up further questions. How do you get there first before someone else makes your idea? How can you help build a culture that rewards people with talent? It’s probably more exciting to look forward to creating many more other things than to waste time holding a grudge...
  • Oh thats annoying but slightly flattering at the same time. I had this done to me before. Im not sure what are the best steps to take
  • Hi Martin, that happened to me and I believe it happens to anyone who's good. And I tell you what... its going to happen again. I'll try flex it a bit. Once I was told: there's only one pot and everyone is sucking with their straws from the same place. So maybe this high profile person didn't rip off your idea, there's a chance that they migh have had the same or a very simmilar idea. But that doesn't really matter. On thing I know is that being truth to yourself and making sure you never do that is what will make you sleep at night. My advice would be sit your ass down and create something even better than that! Something so amazing that it would make people want to copy you again. But this time, you go out there make it and publish it! This way you'll be protecting your ownership. An idea inside your cabinet or sitting on a folder in your computer is nothing. Having the idea is just a smallpart of thge job. Go out and make it!
  • That migth depend on why you would not dare to ruin your relationship with them? Are they working with you at the moment and paying you? Or is it just because you do not want to burn that bridge? In any case, I think you need to have irrefutible evidence that this person stole your idea before doing anything.
  • Sorry to hear this has happened, have you spoken to the AOI or another related organisation?
  • If there is a valuable relationship there then (as a lawyer) I’d be inclined to have a conversation with them about it in the first instance. Let them know that you’re not happy about what’s happened, but that you value the relationship and would rather not have to take legal advice about it. See if there’s anything that can be agreed retrospectively, in terms of recognition and / or a reasonable fee for the short cut they’ve taken on the back of your work and / or agreement re future collaboration. I’d be happy to have a chat about the situation from a legal POV if you think that might help you to understand the strength of your position.
