What is your daily schedule for working from home?

  • I am finding best plan of attack is to:

    - Wake up (slightly later than normal)
    - Get ready for work, shower and get dressed as if going into the office.
    - Move to the living room / different room to work (or set up a work station by a window)
    - Take breaks from your screen, walk to another room, have some water / eat
    - Take a lunch break (shut laptop), read, online exercise class whatever is completely different to your normal job
    - Finish at normal working time, for me that is 6pm, ensure laptop is closed and put away, somewhere you can't see the laptop, in a bag or out of sight to reduce the chance of you working all night / not being able to switch off.

Also really important to not check work comms until you start work and not after finishing. I found not looking at emails until I went to my 'workroom' has been helpful in creating a work / home balance

  • Hi Amelia,
I always make sure that I get up at a time when people are 'getting up to go to work' - have the normal breakfast routine and then go for a walk around my area. Whether it's to get a coffee or find some green space. Helps get my head set for the day and feels like I've done a commute when I return home to the computer. Giving yourself regular breaks is important too so you don't get too burnt out. Giving yourself a proper lunch break. Also finding different places in your home to work so it doens't get too stagnant!
  • Hi Amelia,
I wanted to echo the daily routine/blocks, but add one thing that really changes things for me: a clear goal of what I want to achieve at the end of each block to time. It may be to complete a rough draft, send 5 emails, have a list of ideas for fresh content, etc.
This keeps me on task, and helps me to feel that I'm making progress towards my goals.
  • Hey @Amelia Rouse , in a nutshell i just try to keep it balanced and fit in more time to do my side hustles (as now i don't have to communte and be disturbed as much).
I wake up pretty early, have specific blocks for when i'm working throughout the day (8:30 - 12:00 & 13:00 - 17:00), and take frequent mini-breaks and streches. Then in the evening, outside of having dinner, i take about 4-5hrs, undistrubed, to either paint, produce music or dj practise.
I've been doing this for a week ro so now and it's a pretty sweat deal, but if i'm honest i feel myself going a little stir crazy. My plan is to have a little rethink over the weekend and change up this routine, most likely my setup, to stop it getting stale (for example my desk at home is where i work and do any side hustle stuff, so i'm sat there for the whole day potentially... i need to think about how to start using other areas of the house more).
  • Best tips I have found so far (for me) when working from home:

    1) Get dressed as normal, don't sit in your pjs. This one was a gamechanger for me, sounds obvious, but hard to do when it's day after day!
    2) Set aside your commuting time every day to do something you love. I have started reading 2 hours a day which has been really benefitial to my mental health. I didnt realise how much I missed it.
    3) Leave a zoom meeting open and running all day, then colleagues, friends, relatives can all pop on when they want some company, to have a chat or to ask a question. After a few days it turns into more of an abience than a distraction, plus it's great hearing from my sister and mum (more regulaly than normal!)
    4) Walking the dog. I'm lucky that we can walk the dog and not really touch anything outside (in the current climate). It's a great way to get out the house and clear the mind.
    5) Exercise. My wife and I always do a workout at the end of the day before dinner. Again, it mixes the day up!

Those are the things that have helped me, really interesting reading everyone elses, I am finding some good tips to mix it up in there!
  • I find it is very important to set a structure to your day and stick to it. Also if you live with a partner it's helpful to discuss how you want to work together as a 1 bedroom flat can start to feel even smaller with two of you living and working in the same space 24/7.

    6:40am - wake up
    7.00-8.00 - exercise
    8.00-8.30 - get ready
8.30-9am - finish a couple of small chores, hoover, dust and make sure my work space is tidy etc so this helps to stop me getting distracted during the day!
9am - have breakfast whilst reading emails & then start working!
1pm lunctime - take a proper break, eat at the table, watch some tv
6pm - stop working and turn it all off and try to mentally switch off!
  • Thanks for all these replies! It's interesting to see how people work and realise there are actually alot of similarities!
  • 06:00 - Up with my infant son. We get an hour or so of play time while my wife sleeps.

07:30 - Afterwards, a quick shower and dressed for the day before crossing the 10 steps to the detached garage that houses my home office.

09:00 - Check emails and messages, check in with the team at 10am for a 20 minute "scrum". Followed by getting down to work.

12:00 - Break for lunch with the family.

13:00 - Back at it for another couple hours.

15:00 - I host a virtual "Mug Up" where the team all teleconferences into a web call and we start a group video game like Jackbox. We play for about 30 minutes while just generally chatting and having a good time.

    15:30 - Back to work.

17:30 - Wrap up the last emails and call it a day. Walk the 10 steps back to the house.

  • Hi Amelia!
Every day I change it up slightly, but currently it's getting up, doing 30 - 45 minutes of yoga to ease the tension and start into the day calmly.
Then breakfast + emails, often at the same time :)
    Editing + online meetings
    Editing til lunch
    Social Media Marketing
    Album design
    Online course management
Break to go for a walk around the block
Emails again before logging off for the evening

Hope this helps! Stay safe x

  • Log-in and check emails
    Workout
    Shower
    Breakfast
    Team meeting over Skype
    Work til lunch
    Then work some more
    Break - facetime a friend
    Log off

Read/write/currently learning how to illustrate (any tips would be great!)

    Downtime (Netflix/TV) & dinner

I'm finding it hard to stay as active as I was - I do a little walk around and a few squats and sit ups every hour
