What things do you need to know to get onboarded well for a project?

We're compiling a 'freelancer onboarding' pack, and I wanted to gather your thoughts to help.

If you're a freelancer: what are the things you NEED and WANT to know in the first couple hours of starting work with a new client?

If you're a client working with freelancers, what are the things you NEED and WANT your freelancer to know as early as possible?

  • It often varies but some of the common ones include timeline and budget. About the brief, it really helps for the client to have all the information that is necessary for me to do the work. Often, the briefs are not very clear, which leaves me using my time to fill in the gaps and go back to the client for more infomation.
  • What is the problem and why are we trying to solve it - if it's a project based thing. Would need to know about the core essense of the brand that I am working with as well, valued, key messages etc. Of course timescales and communication expectations of the project at hand, so that it's clear.
  • A well-thought through brief that's distilled into a couple of pages. The project should have a clear defined purpose and USP, and the brief should include only relevant supporting information. I need a sense of the target market and how this communication will change their opinion of the brand/service. Oh and the delivery date/review process.
