Women — what’s the best piece of advice you would give to your younger self starting your first job?

  • Great question Alana :)
To my younger self I would say it is fine not to be fully acknowledged in everything, it is fine to be a beginner and to be new at this. Give yourself time to grow and learn, great things and improvement don't happen overnight. Set realistic expectations.

But most of all I would say to be kind and patient, and I would not let a day pass by without reminding myself that I am worthy :)
  • What a great question. I guess we all started out in utter chaos, but the few points below would have been useful to stick to earlier:
    - Learn how to set boundaries early on: be ok with saying no, push back on things, and most importantly always put your physical and mental health first.
    - Play as much as you can (the admin side will only increase the higher up you move :)
    - Check in with yourself, and if you feel like you're on the wrong track, change direction.
    - Embrace mistakes (there's gonna be a lot, and that's totally fine. It's how you'll be able to react to it and problem solve).
  • It's ok to not know everything. Ask questions, find opportunities to get involved and share your unique skills and talents (both in and outside of the role). Don't be afraid to be yourself. A good workplace will not only accept, but embrace your individuality! Also, if it's feeling all way too much, and you get the courage to speak up and nothing changes/you're penalised for that, it's ok to get out.
  • Such a great question!

I'd tell her to start building her confidence, as it's the MOST important thing, whether in a job or working for yourself. Believe in yourself a bit more and just have fun! Don't be so worried all the time!
  • Hi Alana, what a great question! I would tell her how important it is to cultivate relationships and that networking isn't a cold, 'weird', one-time thing but actually, a 'must' for anyone who wants to go ahead in life. Having mentors or just keeping in contact with old co-workers can go a long way! Wish someone would have told me that earlier :)
