2 day course: Introduction to Nerikomi
Sunday 11th September and Sunday 18th September
11am – 5pm (including lunch break)

Introduction to Nerikomi, is a two-day ceramics course led by ceramicist Mizuyo Yamashita.
Nerikomi, or Neriage is a Japanese technique used to create interesting and detailed patterns in the clay by combining multiple and coloured clays In Japan, this technique has been used to create geometric patterns, flower motifs and cartoon characters in clay.
During this course, students will learn to make patterns by manipulating and colouring clay according to the rules of Nerikomi. Nerikomi slabs will then be used to create simple shapes such as plates and bowls.
This course will cover:
  • Colouring clay
  • Introduction to clay patternmaking including:
1. Ichimatsu (checkered pattern)
2. Uzura-de (a traditional Nerikomi pattern)
3. Striping and marbling
Artwork and objects made during this course will be fired at the Camden Art Centre kiln, and can be taken home by students.

Mizuyo Yamashita is a Japanese ceramicist based in London. Mizuyo makes tableware and objects inspired by traditional shapes & techniques. Mizuyo also teaches the techniques she learnt in the research of Japanese pottery in her studio and at other organisations.

  • This course is suitable for those with little to no experience of ceramics.

  • The course will only go ahead if the minimum participant requirement for the course to run is met. If the course does not go ahead, bookings will be refunded.
  • For every season, each person can only book and attend one of the courses on a ‘pay what you can’ ticket.
  • Evidence of concessionary status must be shown on the first day of the course.
  • Adults’ courses are 18+ unless otherwise stated.
