This two-hour webinar focuses on the situations and historical contexts that have led to artists creating work in isolation by choice, force or circumstance.

Throughout this historic time of isolation, we are dependent on the worlds of science and technology for tangible progress. We turn to artists for the intangible- the artistic expression of our adverse situation in the hope that they might process the pain of our conditions in a meaningful way. Artistic practices are often solitary by definition and many artists work in confinement.

Georgia O’Keefe and Louise Bourgeois were known for spending stretches of time in isolation. Frida Kahlo painted from her bed while convalescing and Yayoi Kusama lives by choice in a psychiatric asylum. Political circumstances were responsible for the isolation of artist Ai Wei Wei who was held in solitary confinement or Felix Nussbaum who fled Nazi Germany and created work in hiding.

In this webinar led by artist Sara Shamsavari you will take a critical look at various personal situations and historical contexts that have led to artists creating work in confinement by choice, force or circumstance.
