The latest in the Art Unlocked series. Join Art UK and Royal Holloway Art Collection in exploring artworks from their collection.

About this event
Art Unlocked is an online event series brought to you by Art UK in collaboration with Bloomberg Philanthropies. Each week, different museum and gallery curators and directors from across the UK will deliver a 30-minute talk on selected works from their collection.
For our latest talk, join Art UK and Dr Naomi Lebens, Head of Cultural Services (College Curator), at Royal Holloway, University of London, for an exciting exploration of some notable works from this collection on 30th November 2022, 5:30pm.
Thomas Holloway broke records in the amount he spent on the paintings for his College, which was founded to offer higher education to female students at a time of great educational inequality. In this talk you'll discover which paintings inspired his most extravagant purchases and why he wanted them for the first picture gallery in Britain created for female viewers.
Art Unlocked is delivered over Zoom Webinar and can be accessed via the event page once you have registered. There will be a short Q&A session after the talk.
The talk is free but there is the option to donate to Royal Holloway Art Collection alongside your ticket. Any donations are much appreciated and will go towards supporting the care of the historic collection and the rolling exhibition programme in the College’s Emily Wilding Davison exhibition space.
About Royal Holloway Art Collection
Royal Holloway and Bedford New College, University of London, holds world-class paintings, sculptures, prints, drawings and watercolours including works by William Powell Frith, John Everett Millais and Edwin Landseer. At the core of the collection are the legacies of two Victorian collectors: the entrepreneur Thomas Holloway (1800–1883) and the artist Christiana Herringham (1852–1929). Their collections have been enhanced through additional gifts, acquisitions and commissions which span from the 17th century to the present day. The Thomas Holloway collection of Victorian paintings is housed in the College’s magnificent Grade 1 listed Picture Gallery.
