HIX ART are excited to present Beyond the Veil - a multi-disciplinary exhibition featuring new, collaborative artworks by London-based milliner Victoria Grant and artist Yurim Gough.
Though seemingly hailing from differing parts of the artistic world, this pair have much in common. Both can be found incorporating nods to their heritage in their work, and both express a serious talent for embellishing the human form. As a milliner, Grant has spent her illustrious career creating signature hats full of attitude and glamour, while Gough has made a return to art from a career in design, and uses handmade ceramic bowls as the canvas for her intricate life drawings.
Upon discovering Gough at The Other Art Fair, Grant felt an instant affinity with her work. The subject of performance runs deeply through both’s practice, and Grant felt “an electric connection to Yurim’s work, joy at its beauty, and a powerful sense of harmony”. This collaboration of the two allows for a deeper look into the themes of play and gender fluidity and serves to showcase the lively merging of two divergent artistic practices.
In Beyond the Veil, the spirit, curiosity and craftsmanship of these two artists combine in the form of three brand-new, collaborative artworks. The decorative headpieces that Grant and Gough have co-created are an eclectic mix of high-fashion, tradition, the surreal, and the cinematic. Gough’s handmade ceramics are adorned with her raw and complex figure drawings, and blend strikingly with the wealth of textures and mediums which Grant brings to her craft. The resulting works make for compelling, stand alone pieces, and raise interesting questions around identity, gender and the roles we play. Each a character in their own right, these colourful and multifarious creations take compelling features from two separate worlds, and combine them together to give birth to an entirely new concept.
The show also features each artists solo work, which offers which offers a greater context for the way in which the pair have united their individual styles and techniques to create these new collaborative works.
Victoria Grant is a British milliner, based in London. Victoria launched her Notting Hill atelier in 2007, and has since become known as the ‘celebrity hatter’, after her work crowned many a famous head. Influenced heavily by British culture, Grants hats convey a witty sense of playfulness, and ceremony.
Yurim Gough is a British-based artist, originally from South Korea. After emigrating to England in 2007, she returned to art after a decade long career of designing shoes, finding herself drawn to her cultural roots in the form of ceramics. Her practice now sees her moulding the bowls she creates in her hands, and then drawing directly on to them, “with no plan, never changing a line”. She then overlays imagery on select pieces, creating a complex and often intense narrative around the individual portraits.
