Join us for a very special evening with the newly crowned winner of the 2022 Women’s Prize for Fiction, Ruth Ozeki. Ruth will be discussing the novel that captured the hearts of this year's judging panel, The Book of Form and Emptiness, in this virtual Book Club brought to you by the Guardian and the Women’s Prize Trust.
The story follows 14-year-old Benny Oh, whose father’s death triggers a cacophony of voices – those of the objects around him. As his mother begins hoarding and Benny finds his days overwhelmed with the sarcasm, kindness, apathy and eccentricism of the inanimate items that make up a life, he attempts to find refuge in the silence of a public library.
Exploring profound questions about reality, mental health, loss and the wonders of language, The Book of Form and Emptiness was the winner of this year’s Women's Prize for Fiction. Commended by judges for its “warmth, intelligence, humour and poignancy,” it is Ozeki’s fourth novel; her third, A Tale for the Time, was shortlisted for the 2013 Booker prize.
Ruth Ozeki will be in conversation with the Guardian’s chief books writer, Lisa Allardice, delving into the novel's fascinating themes and offering readers a unique glimpse into her creative process. You will also have the chance to put your questions to Ruth.
Dive into the book ahead of the event with our special Ticket + Book bundle offer for £18, including P&P, which is a £2 saving. Simply select the book as an 'add-on' at the checkout. Offer available to UK residents only.
You can also add a donation to the Women's Prize Trust with your ticket purchase. All donations are gratefully received and support the Trust's outreach work with women writers of all ages and backgrounds.
