Join Priya Khanchandani in conversation with Yemi Awosile, Mimi Shodeinde and Abiola Onabule on how they are sharing stories, preserving heritage and promoting sustainable practice through their distinct approaches to Yoruba design.

What to expect
The principles of value and care are central to Yoraba design, with local production, bespoke design and the use of natural resources providing a framework for approaching design in the 21st century.

Join an evening at the museum featuring makers working across fashion, products and interiors whose work celebrates the design processes and techniques of Nigerian Yoruba culture and its wider influence on contemporary craft and design on an international scale.

The Design Museum's Head of Curatorial, Priya Khanchandani will discuss the influence that Yoruba material culture has had on the work of AHEC Discovered designer Mimi Shodeinde, design lecturer and practitioner Yemi Awosile, and 2020 Design Museum Designer in Residence Abiola Onabule.

In a conversation on the interpretation of narrative and meaning in traditional Yoruba craft practices, the panellists will explore the role storytelling plays in networks of creative exchange in Nigeria and throughout its diaspora, as well as in their own work. The discussion will celebrate the history of Yoruba material culture, as well its wider influence on contemporary craft and design on an international scale.
