Join us online for a conversation between NOW Gallery curator Jemima Burrill and Nicholas Daley.

Nicholas Daley will be talking with NOW Gallery curator Jemima Burrill about his upcoming exhibition RETURN TO SLYGO.

This talk will look at how the exhibition evolved and discuss how Nicholas’s fierce sense of family and upbringing are a powerful influence and key to understanding this exhibition. Music, film and craftmanship are all vital parts of Nicholas’s practice and are combined with archive images and iconic fashion to create ‘RETURN TO SLYGO’.  Be a part of a discussion about the filmmaking process of the two exclusive films which are launched as part of the exhibition: ‘RETURN TO SLYGO’ and ‘The Knitting History’.

Collaboration brings together Nicholas’s diverse influences, he draws on a variety of creatives, poets, musicians and in particular illustrator Gaurab Thaki, whose graphics emblazon flags and illustrations populate the gallery’s facade. Examining the way Nicholas works will highlight his take on fashion and his understanding of how the past feeds into his current practice, whether working with Fred Perry, paying homage to the reggae legend Peter Tosh, featuring World Champion Karate athlete Jordan Thomas, or making an exhibition for NOW Gallery during lockdown, Nicholas Daley is one to watch.
Please do get in touch with questions for Nicholas through Instagram and on the day.

Nicholas Daley graduated from Central Saint Martins in 2013 and launched his eponymous label in 2015. Since the brand’s genesis, Nicholas has continually explored his dual-ethnic heritage, being of Jamaican and Scottish descent: he widely questions and reflects the notion of multiculturalism within the British identity.
Placing great significance on craftsmanship with his production within the UK and Japan Nicholas works with recognised artisans creating bespoke textiles and fabric finishes for every collection. For the last six seasons Nicholas has been supported by The British Fashion Council’s NEWGEN designer program showcasing his collections during London Fashion Week Men’s. He was also the recipient of the 2019 International Woolmark Prize Semi-Final Award, presenting a custom collection titled ‘Reggae Klub’ .

Jemima Burrill: “Nicholas Daley is giving us the exhibition we need right now. Slygo celebrates community and diversity but also flags up the brilliance and importance of UK design and manufacture. Nicholas Daley brings music and art into the mix, when we need a shot of light hearted hedonism and an exploration of what is good in the world, at this time.”
