His critically acclaimed first book Poverty Safari was awarded the Orwell Prize for political writing in 2018 and was a ground-breaking Sunday Times Bestseller. McGarvey is hailed as the important new voice of a generation from the New York Times to The Guardian. McGarvey is also an acclaimed documentary maker and has presented eight programmes for BBC Scotland including the BBC documentary Class Wars.
