With advances in artificial intelligence and digital alteration platforms – such as Photoshop and other social media filters – empowering media counterfeiters, the volume of deepfakes accelerate during times of crisis and major government elections. Recent examples include the first COVID-19-related deepfake, which involved Belgium’s prime minister and was created by Extinction Rebellion (XR), and the 2016 US presidential campaigns.
However, large-scale geopolitical information operations are not the only way deepfakes have infiltrated society. The use of altered videos and audios are rooted in fake pornography created to harass and humiliate its victims – most often women – with the use of face-swapping and animation.
