Amplifying voices through storytelling. Documentary photography talk with José Sarmento Matos at Leica Store Mayfair.
About this event
In this evening talk held at the Leica gallery Mayfair, award winning Portuguese documentary photographer José Sarmento Matos will discuss his latest project “Jamaika” aswell as sharing his approaches to stories and assignments; the topics and the people that are part of them: visually, personally, and journalistically.
Developed in Portugal during the pandemic with National Geographic Society, “Jamaika” is a work created with the community of the African descendant neighbourhood Jamaika, situated on the outskirts of Lisbon. The partnership of photographer and community resulted in a multimedia piece: a film, a photographic body of work and a collaborative exhibition at Lisbon ́s MAAT museum. Among other issues, the project sought to highlight housing inequalities during a period of continual lockdowns and confinements in Portugal. The film is available to watch at the following link: https://www.natgeo.pt/video/tv/jamaika-documentario-de-jose-sarmento-matos
In Amplifying Voices through storytelling ́ José shares his ethos of collaborative processes, and invites listeners to contemplate care, connection, and equality within the creation of telling personal stories through photography.
The talk will last 45 minutes and will include a slideshow of José’s work followed by a Q&A session.
This talk is free and is open to all.
