The fashion retail revolution: an insight into the shift away from the classical retail model towards the New Generation retail model.

Almost every country across the world has reported cases of Covid-19 although governments have taken different approaches as to how to contain the virus and limit its spread, many have opted for the temporary closure of non-essential physical stores. Such action has disrupted the retail industry, which was already showing signs of struggle pre Covid, with a decline in footfall and consumers estimating that they spend less on fashion. The current Covid pandemic is acting as a catalyst for change and in the past year we have seen a shift away from the classical retail model towards the New Generation retail model.

Mark Pilkington is an experienced retail chief executive and strategy consultant. After graduating from Oxford and INSEAD, he joined Courtaulds, later becoming CEO of Gossard, where he was responsible for initiating the huge global success of the Wonderbra. He then founded Splendour.com – the world’s first direct-to-consumer ecommerce brand, with the backing of Marks & Spencer. Subsequently, he became Chief Executive of KOJ Group, a leading retailer with 850 stores. He is author of ‘Retail Therapy. Why the retail industry is broken – and what can be done to fix it’, which was published by Bloomsbury in 2019. His current role is Director of MarkPilkington.net, a strategy consultancy which advises brands and retailers on how to become leaders in the new consumer revolution.
