Join the Serpentine Arts Technologies team and our contributors to Future Art Ecosystems 2 as we discuss the metaverse and the opportunities and challenges facing artists, producers and cultural institutions within an increasingly virtual landscape.

How do public arts organisations stay relevant within an increasingly virtualised landscape… from adopting production workflows, reporting on new measures for success, to satisfying latest audience and/or player expectations? What emphasis should organisations be placing upon research and development when considering metaverse technologies? Future Art Ecosystems 2: Art x Metaverse proposes a variety of solutions to these including adopting approaches from adjacent creative fields like performance, design, and science.

Join producer and creative director Robin McNicholas from Marshmallow Laser Feast and Alex Boyes Research & Development Platform Producer, as they discuss examples, risks and metrics for success across virtual production beyond visual arts; design, ecology, performance, and biomedical science.

About Robin McNicholas
Robin McNicholas is co-founder and Creative Director of Marshmallow Laser Feast, a UK based experimental production studio. Their work illuminates the hidden natural forces that surround us, inviting participants to navigate with a sensory perception beyond their daily experience. Marshmallow Laser Feast recently took part within Innovate UK’s Audience of the Future Challenge alongside Manchester International Festival and the Royal Shakespeare Company. Key learnings from their project Dream will be shared among many others in conversation.

About FAE2
The second issue of Future Art Ecosystems (FAE2) is produced by the Serpentine R&D Platform in collaboration with Rival Strategy and Guest Producer, Luke Caspar Pearson. It aims to provide analytical and conceptual tools and strategic guidance for the construction of 21st-century cultural infrastructure: systems that would support art and advanced technologies and be responsive to a broader social shift towards virtual experiences.

In the spirit of FAE, our Live Session conversations aim to draw attention and provide greater transparency to infrastructures and systems behind the work of artists and producers. They are also an opportunity to hear directly from FAE2’s contributors as it is their perspectives that form the basis for FAE’s primary research.
